we lost the redevelopment agency that gave a lot of promises. i am trying to keep those promises, but i've got to find more and better ways to interrupt the violence, and i want today to register a personal appeal to our religious leaders to help me do that, find ways. i suspect it's not about money. it's not about numbers of jobs. it's about who we talk about and who we relate to, and how can we penetrate barriers or vacuums where there is no conversations going on? how do we talk to kids that don't have a mother or father? who are they talking with? how do we talk with their aunts or grandparents or brothers or sisters and tell them that we care and get them into a conversation with us. how about putting down the guns? what is it that they need from us to assure them that we have a safe passage for them to be dealing with us? this is what has been on my mind, and even though i helped articulate this new program called "ipo" interrupt violence. predict criminal activity before it happens, but the most important part of the program is the "o" an

for many years the city of san jose has wanted to redevelop this five to six acre site of an eyesore in japantown surrounded by chain link and concreted boarded by 6th, 7th, taylor and jackson street. this site used to be vibrant. it was home to chinatown. in '08 we were here when archaeologist excavated the site for after trtifacts. later today the city could take the first step toward bringing the space back to life when council members decide whether or not to approve basic redevelopment plans for the site and give the go-ahead to continue talks with the developer. that developer would pay the city if they come to an agreement $24 million for this parcel and on it would build six-story apartment buildings housing 600 units and retail space, green space for events like farmer's market and a new creative center for the arts. >> this is a very special place. this is one of the three surviving japantowns in the state of california. we know we have to get this right and it has to be right and not just for the developer or for the city coffers but it has to be right by the community. >>
